Japan's departure tax (International Tourist Tax)
- ¥3,000 per person, per departure from Japan, for departures from July 1, 2026 (previously ¥1,000).
- Usually collected by the airline or cruise line in your ticket price, so you do not pay it separately at the airport.
- If your ticket contract was made before July 1, 2026 with the departure date fixed, the old ¥1,000 rate applies.
- Not charged to: children under 2, transit passengers leaving within 24 hours of entering Japan, crew, and a few other groups.

How much is Japan's departure tax in 2026?
¥3,000 per person per departure from July 1, 2026 (it was ¥1,000). Airlines and cruise lines usually collect it in the ticket price. Children under 2 and transit passengers who leave within 24 hours of arrival are exempt.
I bought my ticket before July 1, 2026. Do I pay ¥3,000?
If your transport contract was made before July 1, 2026 (with the departure date fixed) the old ¥1,000 rate applies even if you leave after July 1. Check the tax lines of your ticket.
How much does an average visitor spend in Japan?
In 2025 a leisure visitor spent ¥224,583 in Japan on average (7.1 nights), not counting international flights, according to the Japan Tourism Agency. Visitors from the US averaged ¥350,133 over 10.7 nights.
