The date that counts is the purchase date (local time where you buy), not the date you start using the pass. JR said its own online reservation site keeps the old price for a limited period; the end date will be announced later.

Prices are JR's official online Smart EX prices for Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and Tsubame trains (the trains the pass covers). Buying at a station ticket office usually costs a little more, so this is a conservative comparison: if the pass wins here, it wins by more at the counter.
Reserved seats cost ¥200 less in off-peak season, ¥200 more in peak season and ¥400 more in the top peak season (double that for trips crossing the Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen boundary).
JR East, JR Hokkaido and JR West local routes (for example Tokyo–Sendai, Tokyo–Kanazawa, Narita Express, Haruka) are not listed yet because JR East changed its fares on March 14, 2026 and we list only prices we could confirm on official pages. Add those trips in 'Other JR rides' using JR's official fare search.
How the calculation works
- We add the price of each one-way trip you enter, then compare the total with the pass price for the length, age and purchase channel you picked.
- Child prices come from the official child column of the same table (children 6–11).
- Seasonal differences (off-peak, peak, top peak) are not included, so real totals can differ by a few hundred yen per trip.
- The pass does not cover Nozomi/Mizuho without a special ticket, non-JR private railways or city subways such as Tokyo Metro. See the official pass page for exactly what is covered.
- Only count trips that fall inside the pass's consecutive days.

Nozomi and Mizuho with the JR Pass
The pass alone does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains. Pass holders can buy a special ticket for each ride (JR Central, per adult, checked September 25, 2026):

FAQ
How much is the JR Pass from October 1, 2026?
For passes bought on or after October 1, 2026 (local time where you buy): 7-day Ordinary ¥53,000, 14-day ¥84,000, 21-day ¥105,000 for adults; Green 7-day ¥74,000, 14-day ¥116,000, 21-day ¥147,000. Children (6–11) pay about half.
Is it still ¥50,000 anywhere?
JR said the official JAPAN RAIL PASS online reservation site keeps the old price for a limited period, with the end date to be announced. On September 25, 2026 that site still listed ¥50,000 for the 7-day Ordinary pass. Travel agencies and exchange orders bought from October 1, 2026 use the new prices.
Can I ride the Nozomi with the JR Pass?
Not with the pass alone. Nozomi and Mizuho trains need an extra special ticket that only pass holders can buy (for example ¥4,960 for Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 for Tokyo–Hiroshima). This calculator compares with Hikari, Sakura, Kodama and other trains the pass covers.
Is a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip enough to make the pass worth it?
Usually not on its own for a 7-day pass. Enter your trips above: the calculator adds the regular reserved-seat prices and compares them with the pass.
